Public consultation on forests

The public consultation on the communication from the European Commission entitled “Intensifying EU action to protect and restore the world’s forests“, which aims to improve the vitality, resilience and extension of forest ecosystems, will remain open until 10 December 2020.

The consultation will contribute to the formulation of the specific EU forestry strategy that the European Commission intends to propose in 2021.

The proposal will include a roadmap for planting at least 3 billion additional trees in the EU by 2030, in full compliance with ecological principles: this goal will create significant job opportunities related to harvesting and growing seeds, planting the seedlings and taking care of their development.

Planting trees is particularly beneficial for cities, and even in the countryside it can be perfectly combined with agroforestry, landscape features and intensified carbon capture.

At the same time, the Commission will continue to work with Member States to ensure that the Union is sufficiently equipped to prevent and extinguish major forest fires, which can cause significant damage to forest biodiversity.
